What We Do
We review pilotage operations and provide independent pilot competency checks.
Our services
Whether our clients require a training progress check, a regular competency check of the organisation’s experienced pilots, or a post-incident check, Marine Check Pilots International (MCPI) are able to design and carry out an assessment that provides a fair and objective review of any pilot’s competency. MCPI uses leading edge competency assessment methods and tools to ensure that our assessments are robust, accurate, and fair.
Using our proprietary systems, or working within the client’s own, we work closely with our clients to deliver best practice pilot assessments.
We review pilotage operations including practices, procedures, and systems against industry good practice and report with recommendations for improvement.
We are often asked: what is the difference between a pilotage operations review and an audit? An audit is performed to verify compliance with the SMS and regulations. A pilotage operations review will observe and evaluate the organisation’s practices and the pilots’ technical and non-technical skills to assure consistency with established good practice.
What we’ve achieved
MCPI check pilots have assessed marine pilots at a number of Australian and New Zealand ports.
MCPI has reviewed marine pilotage operations at a number of Australasian ports and recommended easily actionable initiatives to meet or exceed good practice.
MCPI’s check pilots have carried out marine pilot assessments in a range of situations including during training, resuming work following illness, and as part of a regular schedule of external pilot competency assessments.
When objectivity is required, our clients have successfully relied on MCPI’s independence from any internal relationships within the port and pilots.
MCPI assessment reports have allowed port and terminal management and regulators to gain a fresh perspective on pilot competence under their management.
